Fatal Officer-involved shooting in Scott County investigated
MORTON, Miss. – The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) has launched an investigation into a fatal officer-involved shooting that took place on Highway 13 in Morton involving the Scott County Sheriff’s Office and the Morton Police Department.
The incident began when deputies responded to reports of a subject attempting to break into vehicles in a local business parking lot. Upon arrival, law enforcement observed the suspect driving a yard truck through the lot. When deputies attempted to make contact, the driver fled the scene, initiating a police pursuit.
According to the MBI, the situation escalated on Highway 13 when the suspect, still driving the yard truck, struck a cement truck, a passenger vehicle, and an occupied school bus.
Following these collisions, deputies discharged their weapons to neutralize the threat. The subject was struck by gunfire and sustained fatal injuries.
Despite the chaotic nature of the pursuit and the collision with an occupied school bus, authorities report that no other injuries occurred. No students, drivers, or law enforcement officers were physically harmed during the incident.
The MBI is currently gathering evidence and assessing the critical incident. As is standard procedure, agents will turn over their findings to the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office upon completion of the investigation.
