Bear activity on the rise across Mississippi

Aug. 4, 2025 – Mississippi wildlife officials are urging residents to be aware as black bear sightings increase across the state.

According to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP), this time of year sees young male bears leave their birth territories in search of new home ranges, while older males roam in search of mates. As summer progresses, all bears begin focusing more on food in preparation for the fall and winter months.

From late May through mid-July, MDWFP received a steady stream of reports tracking what is believed to be the same young male black bear as he traveled across northern Mississippi—from southwestern DeSoto County through Tishomingo County and eventually into Alabama.

The bear was often spotted near fruit trees, with a particular fondness for pears. Based on unique characteristics and timing, biologists believe the same animal was responsible for the majority of the sightings.

MDWFP reminds the public that bear activity is increasing and encourages safe and responsible behavior. If you encounter a bear:

  • Give it space and do not approach
  • Never feed it
  • Report your sighting to MDWFP

With Mississippi’s bear population on the move, awareness and caution are key to keeping both wildlife and residents safe.
