Trio of Rangers earn football POTW honors

SENATOBIA – It was a great week for the Northwest football team in picking up weekly accolades with three members of the team earning MACCC Player of the Week honors. Elliot Helps earned Defensive Player of the Week, Jarvis Durr picked up the Offensive award, and Hayden Wolfe added a second one to his tally this season.

Wolfe had one of the highlight performances of the week nationally, making all three of his field goals, including a season best 51-yard attempt to open the game. He added a 28-yard make in the third quarter and his 47-yard make in the fourth quarter turned out to be the game winner as the Rangers needed all three to earn a 16-13 win in the championship game.

Speaking of needing every yard, the Rangers needed every inch of Durr’s 110 total yards that he picked up on Saturday. The sophomore running back had his best day of the year carrying and receiving the ball, going for 65 yards on the ground and adding another 45 through the air. Eight of those 45 came on the final screen play of the game for the Rangers who were facing third-and-eight with a chance to ice the game, and the Brandon, Mississippi native was able to just get enough to move the chains and keep the drive going.

On the defensive side, Elliot Helps was just as important even though he didn’t have the flashiest of numbers for a linebacker. The sophomore had one of the two interceptions in the game for the Rangers, taking in a pass on the goal line in the fourth quarter to keep it from Tyler Henderson and end a drive by the Bulldogs before they could take the lead. It was his second interception in as many games.

All three Rangers will be up for the National Player of the Week honor after taking home the award this week for the conference.
