Thursday sports: Lewisburg volleyball remains unbeaten in region play
Sept. 5, 2024 – Lewisburg and Oxford are now the only Region 1-7A volleyball teams that are unbeaten after Thursday’s action. Both picked up victories against region foes that puts the Lady Patriots, last year’s 7A state champions, a half-game ahead of the Oxford Lady Chargers, heading into a battle against each other on Tuesday night, Sept. 10 at Lewisburg.
Thursday night at DeSoto Central, Lewisburg swept DeSoto Central in three straight, winning the match 25-14, 25-16, and 25-15.
In the first set, Lewisburg took control early, taking a 9-6 lead after a block for a point by Mary Olivia Barnes. The lead grew to 16-9, thanks to a kill that forced DeSoto Central to call its second timeout of the set. Lewisburg continued to grow the lead to the 25-14 win.
The second set started the same way, with the Lady Patriots taking a 4-1 edge after a DeSoto Central net violation. That lead continued to grow again, reaching 17-7 after a kill and 20-10 after a service ace by Baylee Burchyett.
But the Lady Jags did mount a comeback, getting the set to 22-15, which caused Lewisburg to call a timeout. That seemed to gather the Lady Patriots together, with a kill after the timeout, a kill from Barnes, and an ace from Kelis Parker to finish the set at 25-16.
The third set was a mirror result of the others, with Lewisburg taking a 6-1 lead following a kill from Addison Cole. DeSoto Central rallied, getting within 8-5 Lewisburg when Genesis Weeks hit a kill. That would be as close as the Lady Jags would get, however, with a kill from Hallie Wright making the set score 13-5 Lewisburg, Ava Becker served a pair of aces for a 20-11 lead and one final kill finished the set and match with a 25-15 final result.
“We’re getting better every week and that’s all I can ask from them,” coach Amy Hendrichovsky said. “We’re halfway through the season and need to continue to get better and work on things for the next few weeks.”
Lewisburg is 5-0 in region play and Oxford is also undefeated in the region after Thursday’s 3-2 victory over Hernando, with the fifth and deciding set going to Oxford 15-1.
