Saturday sports: Lady Gators volleyball wins county championship

Sep 28, 2024 – Lake Cormorant came away with the DeSoto County volleyball tournament championship Saturday at Center Hill High School. The Lady Gators went through the tournament without losing a set on their way to the title.  

Lake Cormorant defeated DeSoto Central in the championship match 2-0, after the Gators advanced with a 2-0 victory in the semifinals over Lewisburg. DeSoto Central reached the final match with a 2-0 victory over Hernando.  

Schools were divided in pools and played each other in the morning part of the tournament to determine the top four teams to advance to the semifinals.  

Sofia Gonzalez of Lake Cormorant was named the County MVP and All-County First, Second and Honorable Mentions were also announced.

All county second team members. Hallie Wright and Allie Kate Hall of Lewisburg, Mary Catherine Couch of Hernando, Kassidy Joyner of Center Hill, and Sydney Tague of DeSoto Central.
All county honorable mention. Zion Rucker and Remy McIntosh of DeSoto Central, Kylee Garcia of Hernando, Payten Murphy of Center Hill, Katrina Shears and Ella Holcomb of Olive Branch, Ariana Woods of Lake Cormorant, Amberlee Holley of Hernando, Italia Abushanab of Southaven, and Ella Richardson of Center Hill.

SPORTS ETC.: Olive Branch took third in the Boys’ 4A-7A portion of the Mustang Stampede Invitational cross country meet at Center Hill High School on Saturday. Arlington, Tenn. won the team title with 27 points, followed by Collierville, Tenn. with 40 points and Olive Branch with 78. Hernando finished fifth and Center Hill was seventh. Sophomore Preston Mundy of Olive Branch had the best DeSoto County finish, finishing in second place with a time of 15:56.10.

Arlington also won the girls’ 4A-7A team title with a score of 35 points, followed by Collierville, Tenn. and Center Hill in third place with 88 points. Hernando was fourth with 106 points and Olive Branch was sixth with a total of 139 points. Mary-Magers Anderson of Center Hill had the county’s best finish in the girls’ run in a time of 21:22.00, good for seventh place overall.

Northwest Mississippi Community College volleyball won its 11th straight match Saturday, after wins over East Central College 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-13), and Frontier College 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-22).
