Rust College adds veteran coach Scotty Mason to Men’s Basketball staff
HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. – Rust College Athletics has announced the hiring of Scotty Mason as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach, bringing more than two decades of experience in coaching and player development to the Bearcats’ program.
Mason’s career has been dedicated to building athletes’ skills in all phases of the game, including shooting, passing, defense, rebounding, conditioning, and mental preparation. He is widely recognized for incorporating advanced training methods such as plyometrics and emphasizing discipline and coordination in his approach.
Most recently, Mason served as Assistant Coach and Player Development Coordinator at Edward Waters College (2022–2023) and worked as a Player Development Coach with the Zhejiang Golden Bulls of the Chinese Basketball Association in 2022. He also held the role of Director of Player Development at Fort Erie International Academy in Canada (2021–2022).
Mason’s experience spans high school, collegiate, and professional levels. His résumé includes work as an Assistant Coach and Player Development Specialist at Memphis East High School (2016–2017) and as a Player Development Coach with the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies from 2007 to 2009.
“Coach Mason’s wealth of knowledge, proven track record in player development, and experience at multiple levels of competition will be a tremendous asset to our men’s basketball program,” said Rust College Director of Athletics Jeremy Patterson. “We are excited to welcome him to Bearcat Nation as we continue to strengthen our program both on and off the court.”
Head Men’s Basketball Coach Barry Wellington echoed that enthusiasm. “I am thrilled to have Coach Mason join our staff,” Wellington said. “His experience at the professional and collegiate levels, combined with his ability to develop players both mentally and physically, will have an immediate impact on our team’s growth and success.”
