Northwest Women’s Soccer Scores Five First-Half Goals in NJCAA Tournament Win
WICHITA, Kan. – The No. 3 Northwest Mississippi Community College women’s soccer team stormed past Southern Union State Community College with a 5-2 victory Sunday afternoon in the opening round of the 2025 NJCAA Division II National Tournament. The Rangers scored all five goals in the first half, showcasing their offensive depth and limiting the Bison to just four shots.
Southern Union struck first when Alexia Charqueno scored unassisted just over a minute into the match. But Northwest quickly responded, with Emma Jensen’s free-kick equalizer in the eighth minute sparking a scoring barrage. Maggie Pace, Caroline Perkins, Mary Logan Clark, and a deflected own goal pushed the Rangers ahead 5-1 by the 28th minute. Macy Chambers added a second-half goal for Southern Union to close the gap to 5-2.
Head coach James Beattie praised his team’s resilience after the early setback. “For me the reaction is what was important. We adjusted a few things tactically and it flipped and the game went in our favor,” Beattie said.
Aven Mathis emphasized the team’s depth and unity. “It just shows all the talent we have on this team and the diversity we have. Everyone touched the field and that showed today,” she said.
