Northwest women’s soccer keep top ranking

Oct. 21, 2024 After a light slate that featured a 9-1 road win at East Mississippi last week, the Northwest women’s soccer program has retained its No. 1 overall ranking in the latest NJCAA Division II poll, released Monday afternoon.

It’s the ninth straight poll to feature the Lady Rangers in the top spot, the longest consecutive No. 1 streak since Heartland Community College’s 10-week stay at the top of the rankings during the 2021 season.

Northwest (13-0, 9-0 MACCC) is joined by an unchanged top five consisting of Johnson County (Kan.) at No. 2, third-ranked Heartland, No. 4 Holmes and fifth-ranked Phoenix College.

Aside from the Lady Rangers and Holmes, three other MACCC programs are in the national rankings this week, led by No. 7 Jones College. Pearl River remains at No. 12 and Itawamba slides a spot from 18th to 19th. Additionally, Mississippi Gulf Coast is unranked but receiving votes.

Northwest enters the final stretch of the regular season with three matches remaining on the schedule. The Lady Rangers will face Southwest Mississippi on Tuesday at 5 p.m., marking the regular season road finale. Northwest then returns home to host Copiah-Lincoln on Friday, October 25 and Meridian on Tuesday, October 29 to close out the season.
