Northwest women’s athletics secures top state academic honor with 100 percent graduation rate
SENATOBIA, Miss. – The women’s athletic programs at Northwest Mississippi Community College have earned the state’s highest academic honor, securing the prestigious Halbrook Award for Academic Achievement.
Presented by the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL), the award recognizes the top graduation rates among the state’s colleges. The Northwest Rangers women’s teams achieved a 100 percent graduation rate, leading them to share the title for the Mississippi Community College Division with Jones College.
This remarkable accomplishment, which saw 29 female student-athletes graduate from the base number, marks only the second time in program history the Rangers have received this award. The only other instance was in the 2017-18 academic year.
The Halbrook Award is the premier honor for academic achievement in collegiate athletics in Mississippi, focusing directly on the percentage of student-athletes who successfully graduate.
Northwest’s perfect graduation rate was a collective effort across all six women’s sports programs. The specific number of graduates from each team is as follows:
- Softball: 10
- Women’s Soccer: 9
- Volleyball: 4
- Women’s Tennis: 3
- Women’s Basketball: 2
- Women’s Golf: 1
This achievement underscores the Northwest athletic department’s commitment to excellence both in competition and in the classroom, demonstrating a culture that prioritizes student-athlete success beyond the playing field.
