Northwest volleyball routs Jackson State, White hits career-high assists
JACKSON, Tenn. – The Northwest Mississippi Community College volleyball team secured a decisive bounce-back victory Thursday, defeating Jackson State Community College in four sets (25-12, 25-21, 23-25, 25-18) on the road to improve their season record to 17-3.
Freshman setter Dallas White was one of three Rangers to set a career high, dishing out 31 assists in the match. Hitters Adalyn Callahan and Chloe Fesperman also achieved personal bests.
“It was a great bounce-back win for us tonight versus an athletic Jackson State team,” Head Volleyball Coach Allyson Burchyett said. “We were able to work on some different lineups and rest some players. We are ready to roll into the second half of our season.”
Northwest started strong, overwhelming the Green Jays in the first set with a 7-0 opening run. The Rangers tallied 14 kills and hit $.345$ en route to a dominant 25-12 win. Jackson State mounted a more challenging effort in the second set, briefly holding a lead, but Northwest pulled away for a 25-21 victory, improving their hitting percentage while committing only one error.
The Green Jays managed to extend the match in the third set, which saw six ties late in the contest. Despite Northwest registering 16 kills and hitting an even $.300$, Jackson State edged out a 25-23 win. However, the Rangers regained control in the fourth set, jumping to a 9-4 lead and ultimately closing out the match 25-18.
Callahan led the offense with a career-high 19 kills while hitting $.359$. She also completed a double-double with 15 digs. Fesperman also set a career-high, recording 15 kills and securing a double-double with 11 digs. Nine different Rangers recorded at least one kill.
White’s career-best 31 assists orchestrated the high-powered offense. Fellow setter Saylor Bryant added 12 assists. Reese McIntosh led the serving game with three of the team’s eight total aces.
The Rangers are scheduled to travel to Pearl River on Monday seeking revenge against the Wildcats. They return home Wednesday at 5 p.m. to host Jones College in a crucial MACCC match.
