WESSON, Miss. – The Northwest Mississippi Community College men’s soccer team’s season came to an end Tuesday night, as the Rangers fell 3-1 to Copiah-Lincoln Community College in a drenching rainstorm.
An early deficit proved too much to overcome, as the Rangers found themselves in a 3-0 hole within the first 20 minutes.
The Wolves struck first in the fifth minute when a 20-yard free kick from Yohan Bedoya was initially saved by Northwest goalie Jacob Little, but the wet conditions caused the ball to spin free and cross the line. Alvaro De La Torre made it 2-0 in the 14th minute on a counterattack.
Northwest’s struggles continued when a deflected clearance attempt resulted in an own goal in the 19th minute. The Rangers had a chance to get on the board minutes later with a penalty kick, but Tendai Machingura’s attempt was saved.
Despite the deficit, Northwest controlled the second half. Tyler Starnes scored the Rangers’ lone goal in the 62nd minute, a blistering shot from 30 yards out. The goal was the sophomore’s eighth of the season, giving him the outright team lead.
The Rangers put up 11 shots in the second half but could not find the net again.
Little recorded five saves in the match, finishing his two-year career with a program-record 266 saves. Northwest caps its season with six wins, tying the most for the program since the 2016 campaign.
