Monday sports: Lewisburg teams open holiday tournament with wins

Nov 25, 2024-Both Lewisburg High School basketball teams won semifinal games of their own holiday tournament Monday, with both Patriots and Lady Patriots moving past H.W. Byers. 

LEWISBURG (BOYS) 57, H.W. BYERS 42: The Patriots quickly rushed out to a 12-2 lead after one quarter, led by Chandler Craig’s five points, including one three-point basket. H.W. Byers recovered somewhat to put 13 points on the scoreboard in the second quarter, but the Patriots held a 27-15 lead at halftime. Colsen Alexander scored eight of his 15 points in the second period of play.  

Coming out of the locker room for the third quarter, Alexander added another seven points to help extend the Lewisburg lead by another basket to 42-28. Tybious Ware, named Player of the Game for leading the Patriots with 16 points for the game, knocked down a pair of baskets in the third quarter and added another six in the fourth.  

In addition to hitting seven baskets from the floor, Ware added a pair of free throws in three attempts.

Jessie Hughes was the leading scorer for the Lions with 11 points.  

LEWISBURG GIRLS 33. H.W. BYERS 27: The Lady Patriots won their first game of the season in the six-point victory over the Lady Lions. Parker Moss provided almost all of the Lewisburg offense, scoring a game-high 23 points to earn Player of the Game honors. Moss netted eight field goals, two of which were three-pointers, and added five three throws in 10 attempts. 

Rylee Lewis and Ciara Banks each added three for Lewisburg. H.W. Byers was paced by Madisyn Euell with 17 points.  

Both Lewisburg teams will play their West Harrison counterparts on Tuesday in the tournament championship games.

SPORTS ETC.: Northwest Mississippi Community College learned Monday its opponent for the semifinals of the NJCAA Division I football playoffs. The Rangers, seeded fourth, will play top-seeded Iowa Western at 7 p.m. on Dec. 6 at Lewis Central High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Hutchinson, Kansas and Georgia Military College meet two nights later on Dec. 8 in the other semifinal game. The winners meet for the national title on Dec. 18, at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas.
