It was a light night for local sports, but some basketball was played on a Monday evening with the Christmas break arriving soon.
At Northpoint Christian, the young Trojan boys’ basketball team welcomed the Brighton (Tenn.) Cardinals to Manley Court but visitors would leave with a solid 71-51 victory.
The outcome might have been more one-sided for the young Trojans, a team that has just three seniors on the roster. However, junior Myles Colom filled up the basket for 27 points to lead Northpoint in the contest. Colom finished with six three-pointers on the night and 11 of his points came in the fourth quarter. Brennan Abernathy was next with just seven points for the Trojans (2-4)
Junior Johnson was the leading scorer for Brighton with 13 points, followed by Cayden Young with 12.
Brighton took an 11-5 lead in a first quarter that saw the Cardinals score a trio of three-pointers and added a late basket.

The lead grew by four in the second quarter as the first half ended 30-20 for Brighton.
The Cardinals broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the Trojans by a 24-14 margin for a 54-34 lead heading into the final quarter. Ten of the Cardinals’ 24 third-quarter points came from Johnson.
Colom answered in the fourth quarter with 11 points in the period, a trio of three-pointers and a pair of free throws.
Northpoint was 9-16 at the free throw line, while Brighton finished 9-19 from the charity stripe. Each team ended the contest with eight three-pointers.
A busy week continues for the Trojans, being led for the first season by new coach Luke Chapman. The former head coach at Holly Springs High School was a former assistant at Center Hill High School and Jones College to head coach Newton Mealer at both locations.
Northpoint plays at Marshall Academy on Thursday and hosts Fayette Academy on Friday night.
