Hustle rebound to beat Birmingham in series rematch
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Birmingham Squadron dropped their second straight game Friday night, falling 124-99 to the Memphis Hustle in the final contest of their NBA G League season series.
Memphis (4-7) came out firing after a sluggish offensive performance earlier in the week, racing to a 14-point lead in less than five minutes. Birmingham (3-6) briefly cut the deficit to three, but the Hustle closed the opening quarter ahead 36-26.
The visitors continued their hot shooting in the second period, hitting 60 percent from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc. Memphis carried a commanding 78-41 advantage into halftime.
Birmingham fought back in the second half, but the gap proved insurmountable as the Hustle secured the victory and evened the season series at one apiece.
Johnny O’Neil paced the Squadron for the second consecutive game, finishing with 20 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. He connected on 5-of-8 attempts from three-point range.
Memphis’ Charlie Brown Jr. led all scorers with 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting, including 6-of-9 from deep. He added five rebounds and four assists in the win.
