Horn Lake outruns DeSoto Central in Region 1-7A clash

HORN LAKE, Miss. – Linkin Sanders’ three touchdowns led the Horn Lake Eagles to a 35-20 Region 1-7A football victory over DeSoto Central Friday night at Horn Lake. The victory improved the Eagles’ overall record to 5-2 while DeSoto Central dropped to 5-3. The Jaguars’ win streak stopped at four in a row with the loss.  

Horn Lake running back Floyd Sinegal opened the scoring with 4:32 remaining in the first quarter for Horn Lake with a one-yard touchdown run and a 7-0 lead after the extra-point kick. 

In the second quarter, DeSoto Central tied the score at 7-7 when quarterback Eric Perry hit Cade Rodgers on a 37-yard pass play for a score with 2:52 left in the half. Sanders would give Horn Lake a 14-7 lead with 29 seconds left in the half on the first of his three scores from one yard away.  

Sanders extended Horn Lake’s lead to 20-7 with 4:07 to go in the third quarter on a 10-yard scoring run and quarterback Jason Edwards Jr. made it 28-7 with an 18 yard run for a touchdown with1:04 left in the quarter. The Eagles added a two-point conversion run for the 21-point lead. 

DeSoto Central added a pair of touchdown passes in the fourth quarter from Perry, one on the first play of the final 12 minutes to Ter’Myihias Welch of 49 yards, and the other again to Welch of 29 yards with 4:40 remaining. 

However, Sanders helped put the game away with his third touchdown run, this time from three yards, for a score.

Both Horn Lake and DeSoto Central join Hernando and Southaven with 1-1 records in Region 1-7A. Tupelo improved to 2-0 in the region with its Friday win over Hernando and Lewisburg lost for the second time on the region schedule.

NOTABLES

JaCobie Scroggins threw for 208 yards and three touchdowns in the Southaven victory.  Scroggins also ran for a score.  Northpoint Christian has now won seven straight games after losing its first two. The Trojans have an off week ahead before finishing the regular season on Oct. 31 against Lausanne Collegiate at Northpoint.
