Friday sports: Autry powers Center Hill “homecoming”
If the football end zone is Lawrence Autry’s home, then the Center Hill running back had several “homecomings” on Homecoming Night at the Hill in a 45-8 victory over the Gentry Rams.
Autry, who has been the Mustangs’ main offensive threat during the 2024 football season, scored four touchdowns in the victory, had a fifth score called back by penalty, and had another long run from the Mustangs 44 yard line get stopped just two yards short of returning to his football “home” again.
It was quarterback Conner Floyd who would open the scoring in the first quarter on a 25-yard run with 4:47 left for a 7-0 lead.
Then, in the second quarter, Autry came to the front of the offense with scoring runs of eight and 45 yards to make the Center Hill lead 21-0 with 6:41 left in the half.
Jacorey Courtney scored Gentry’s only touchdown of the night on a one-yard dive to get the Rams within 21-8 at half.
The halftime break seemed to rejuvenate the Center Hill back, who would score again on two and 20 yard runs to make the score 35-8 halfway through the third quarter. An apparent 53-yard touchdown was called back on a penalty.
One more score and a 30-yard field goal by Aidan Anewalt with 6:11 left gave Center Hill a 37-point lead to set the game clock in continuous motion for the remainder of the contest.
The Mustangs, now 3-1 for the season, challenge the Tigers in Hernando next week. Gentry (1-3), who lost to Center Hill 20-8 last year in Indianola, is at Clarksdale next Friday.
