Delgado, Harrell Sweep Women’s Soccer POTW Honors
After last week’s clean sweep, which included two wins against nationally-ranked opponents in Missouri, Northwest freshman midfielder Mari Julia Delgado and goalkeeper Anna Kathryn Harrell have swept MACCC Women’s Soccer Player of the Week honors.
Both players are the first Lady Rangers to be selected for the POTW accolades, which are nominated and voted upon by the sports information directors of each MACCC school.
A native of Trinity, Ala., Delgado scored four goals and one assist in three matches. She netted a pair of goals with an assist in the Lady Rangers’ 7-1 blowout of then-No. 12 St. Louis last Wednesday, before adding one score each in victories against No. 16 Southwestern Illinois and Sunday’s 4-0 shutout against Mineral Area College.
For the season, Delgado leads the team in scoring with six goals. The West Morgan High School alumnus also has two assists to her credit.
As for Harrell, the freshman goalkeeper from Tupelo was tested heavily in the Lady Rangers’ 1-0 victory against Southwestern Illinois last Thursday. Harrell stopped 11 shots on-goal and preserved the shutout for Northwest, while tacking on two saves apiece in wins against St. Louis and Mineral Area College.
Harrell has started all six matches so far for Northwest and has 21 saves on the season. Her lone goal allowed came late in the Lady Rangers’ 7-1 victory at St. Louis.
Northwest is 6-0 overall and continues to hold on to its No. 3 national ranking. The Lady Rangers will open conference play on Friday, September 15 at Meridian, slated for a 5 P.M. kickoff.
