Chastain named as Magnolia Heights girls’ basketball coach

Magnolia Heights School news release

May 14, 2025 — Magnolia Heights School has announced the return of veteran coach and accomplished educator Robin Chastain as the new head coach of the Lady Chiefs basketball program.

Chastain returns to familiar territory, bringing with her a winning mindset and a wealth of experience. This marks her second coaching stint at Magnolia Heights, where she led the Lady Chiefs from 2014 to 2018.

Magnolia Heights Head of School Cliff Johnston said, “We are excited about Coach Chastain’s return to Magnolia Heights. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, as well as an impressive background in coaching and developing players. We look forward to seeing our student-athletes grow under her leadership.”

With 223 career wins over 11 head coaching seasons, Chastain has been a proven program builder across the Mid-South Association of Independent Schools (MAIS). Her coaching résumé includes stops at Winston Academy, Kirk Academy, and, most recently, Starkville Academy. Chastain also has two years as the head of school at her alma mater, Marvell Academy.

Chastain’s leadership and coaching philosophies are rooted in toughness, problem-solving, perseverance, and loyalty—values she has instilled in student-athletes throughout her 16 years on the sidelines and 18 years in the MAIS.

“I am excited for the opportunity to return to Magnolia Heights,” said Chastain. “Our goal will be to move the needle in a positive direction. Putting MHS girls’ basketball on the map is my top priority.”

Chastain also connected to the school: “I have deep ties to the community that Magnolia Heights serves and its families. MHS has always remained near and dear to my heart, and I am thrilled to be back.”

Chiefs’ Athletic Director, Jake Long, feels the Lady Chiefs have made a solid choice for their new leader. “Coach Chastain is a proven winner. Her understanding of our school’s mission, our league, and her ability to connect with student-athletes is second to none. We’re confident she will continue to elevate Lady Chiefs basketball.”

As Magnolia Heights continues strengthening its athletic tradition, Chastain’s return signals a new chapter for the girls’ basketball program. The Lady Chiefs are coming off a 15-13 season and will return five key contributors in 2025.
