Ben Johnson to return as Memphis Redbirds manager in 2026

Ben Johnson, a Memphis native and former Major League outfielder, will return as manager of the Memphis Redbirds for the 2026 season, marking his record seventh year at the helm. Johnson cemented his place in team history in 2025, guiding the Redbirds to an 80-68 record and becoming the franchise’s all-time winningest manager. It was the team’s first winning season since 2018, a milestone that underscored Johnson’s leadership and development of talent.

Last season, six Redbirds players earned promotions to St. Louis, making their Major League debuts under Johnson’s guidance. He now enters 2026 with 424 career wins as manager.

Johnson’s baseball journey began at Germantown High School before being drafted by the Cardinals in the fourth round of the 1999 MLB Draft. He played in the Cardinals’ farm system before being traded to the San Diego Padres, where he made his MLB debut in 2005. Johnson later played for the New York Mets, completing a 10-year Minor League career with 901 games, 115 home runs, and 473 RBIs.

The Redbirds’ 2026 coaching staff features returning leaders Darwin Marrero, Howie Clark, Peter Mooney, and Jon Hill, alongside new additions Alex Wolfinger, Kinu Shabata, and Ollie Kadey, formerly of the Detroit Tigers organization.

The Redbirds open their 2026 season on March 27 against the Gwinnett Stripers and host their home opener on March 31 against the Norfolk Tides. Fans can visit memphisredbirds.com for updates on tickets, promotions, and theme nights.
