YMCA facilities under brief lockdown Friday

June 13, 2025 – If you were looking to take a dip in the swimming pool or do some running on the treadmill at your local YMCA today, there was a time during the day when you may have been turned away.

The YMCA of Memphis & the Mid-South did an operational lockdown of all its facilities late this morning. That came after a threat was called into the Y’s Customer Service Support team.  The Olive Branch Family YMCA and Lynda & Bill Austin YMCA Early Learning Center in Hernando came under the blanket facility lockdown.

The lockdown was lifted at mid-afternoon on Friday and officials classified the threat as “unverified.” Memphis Police Department did report that threat calls had been made to five YMCA locations in Memphis.

The source of the concern was quickly identified, YMCA officials said late Friday afternoon, and it was confirmed that there was never a true or credible threat to our association.

“All YMCA locations remain safe,” said a spokesperson for the YMCA. “We are grateful for the rapid and professional response of our YMCA team, as well as the strong support and guidance from our local law enforcement partners throughout this situation.”

All YMCA programs and locations will return to normal operations on Saturday, June 14.

“The safety of members, families, team members, and the children served was the driving force behind this decision,” said a news release from the YMCA in announcing the lifting of the lockdown.
