What’s open, closed on New Year’s Day

As residents prepare to ring in the new year, city offices and services across DeSoto County will observe closures and modified schedules on New Year’s Day, Thursday, Jan. 1.

City halls and non-emergency government offices in Southaven, Olive Branch, Hernando, and Horn Lake will be closed.  Emergency services, including police, fire, and EMS, will remain fully operational throughout the holiday.

Garbage collections are expected to follow a slide schedule in all four cities, meaning:

  • Monday–Wednesday routes: normal pickup
  • Thursday routes: moved to Friday
  • Friday routes: moved to Saturday

Residents are encouraged to place bins curbside one day later than usual if their regular pickup falls on Thursday or Friday.

The U.S. Postal Service will be closed Jan. 1, with no regular mail delivery. However, Priority Mail Express will still operate.

UPS and FedEx will offer limited services, with only Express Critical and Custom Critical deliveries available, respectively.

All major banks will be closed Thursday, though ATMs will remain accessible.
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will also be closed for the holiday.

Most major retailers will be open, possibly with adjusted hours. Be sure to check your store location to see specific hours.

Tanger Outlets Southaven will operate from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on New Year’s Day.
