Weeklong observance honors 911 telecommunicators
National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is being observed this week to recognize the role of 911 operators, call-takers and dispatchers, an agency statement said.
The observance was established in 1981, the statement said.
The statement said dispatchers are often the first to learn of an emergency, serve as a calming voice during crises and act as critical partners for officers on a scene.
Agency officials said dispatchers work nonstop during 12-hour shifts, rarely get breaks and carry heavy stress. The statement added, “We are proud of them and could not do it without the partnership they share with our sworn staff. Thank you to each of our dispatchers!”
