Waste Connections working to collect garbage; ice, road conditions means several routes not serviced
Key Points
- Safety Delays: Dangerous road conditions following a winter storm have forced Waste Connections to bypass several Monday-route residential roads.
- Dumpster Contingency: DeSoto County has deployed 16 strategic dumpsters to mitigate overflow, with crews manually clearing space to accommodate residents.
- Recovery Timeline: Waste Connections expects to complete critical dumpster swaps and resume full service as soon as weather-impacted roads are deemed navigable.
HERNANDO, Miss. — DeSoto County officials are urging patience as Waste Connections navigates the treacherous aftermath of a winter storm that has hampered garbage collection across the region. While recovery efforts are underway, lingering ice and hazardous road conditions prevented crews from servicing dozens of Monday-route roads.
The DeSoto County Board of Supervisors, moving to address the buildup of household waste, has coordinated the strategic placement of 16 dumpsters throughout the county. These sites are designed to provide a pressure valve for residents whose curbside service has been delayed by the inclement weather.
“Waste Connections says that any roads skipped due to road conditions will be serviced once conditions allow,” the county stated in an update.
The logistical challenge has been compounded by delays in dumpster deliveries. To ensure residents still have access to disposal sites, county crews have been manually removing trash from existing bins to create temporary space. Waste Connections anticipates completing the necessary “swaps”—replacing full bins with empty ones—by Wednesday.
As of Wednesday morning, approximately 100 percent of the planned relief sites are being monitored, though two locations—Johnson Creek Trail Head and Nesbit Water Association—are not expected to be fully operational until later today.
