Two die in Thanksgiving weekend accidents, one in Marshall County
The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) has reported two fatalities during the Thanksgiving Day holiday period, which ended Sunday at 12 midnight. One of the fatal accidents occurred in Marshall County with the victim being a woman from Memphis.
On Sunday evening at approximately 7:35 p.m. troopers responded to a fatal crash on state Highway 302 in Marshall County involving a pedestrian. MHP reported a 2020 Nissan Maxima driven by 28-year-old Trevan L. Hampton of Holly Springs was traveling east on state Highway 302 when it struck 62-year-old Sherry K. Nicholson of Memphis, who was walking in the roadway. Nicholson received fatal injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other fatality in the state during the holiday took place in Leake County and also involved a pedestrian. MHP responded on Wednesday, Nov. 27 shortly before 7 p.m. to the crash on state Highway 13 in Leake County. A 2018 Infiniti Q50 driven by 30-year-old Sharayne Hawkins of Forest traveled south on Highway 13 when the vehicle struck 30-year-old Devonta Deering of Lena, who was walking south on state Highway 13. Deering received fatal injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both accidents remain under investigation, MHP reported.
During the holiday weekend, troopers issued a total of 6,662 citations, made 80 arrests for impaired driving, and cited 629 motorists for occupant restraint violations. MHP also investigated 187 crashes resulting in 48 injuries, with two fatal crashes and two deaths.
