Tuggle speaks on leadership at Olive Branch “Doughnuts with Dads” event

Aug. 20, 2025 – What began as a modest call for fathers to participate in “Doughnuts with Dads” for the Olive Branch football team on Saturday morning, Aug. 16 — where only 30 of 90 football players’ fathers initially signed up—quickly grew into a powerful display of support.

DeSoto County Sheriff Thomas Tuggle delivered a passionate keynote address that emphasized leadership, courage, and the vital role men play in shaping the next generation.

Sheriff Tuggle’s Message

“This event right here needs to go viral,” Tuggle said. “Because that’s what I’m fighting every day: men to step up and do what men do—and that is lead.”

Tuggle spoke on the true meaning of courage:

“Courage is that quality to recognize the fear of danger or criticism, but enables a man or woman to proceed in the face of it with calmness and firmness.”

He also challenged stereotypes about masculinity, noting that vulnerability can be a strength.

“Men that shed tears are men of courage. What they’re saying to the rest of the world is, ‘I don’t care about the criticism that’s going to come from small minds.’”

Tuggle further distinguished between “great minds” that discuss ideas, “average minds” that discuss events, and “small minds” that discuss people—urging young men to avoid negative circles.

Lessons on Choices and Friends

The sheriff stressed the importance of wise decisions and choosing friends carefully, sharing the sobering story of a 16-year-old now serving time as an adult.

“He will never play another game on PlayStation in his life. Think about it before you do it. Pick your friends wisely,” Tuggle warned.

On betrayal, he added:

“It’s not the stab in the back that causes the pain, it’s when you turn around and see who’s holding that knife.”

LIFE With an Extra “E”

Tuggle also introduced his acronym “LIFE with an extra E” as a guide for young leaders:

  • L – Learn your passion; discover what motivates you.
  • I – Be intrigued by your path, but cautious—some may try to dim your light.
  • F – Forgive; it frees you from becoming what you hold on to.
  • E – Emulate Christ in everything you do.
  • Extra E – Encourage others to do the same.

Building the Next Generation

The event underscored the community’s commitment to raising strong, responsible young men by bringing together fathers, mentors, and leaders.

“Young men, I want you to listen to your leaders. Dads, I can’t thank you enough. All the men that showed up—I can’t thank you enough,” Sheriff Tuggle said. “This is what this country needs. We need men to step up. We’re safe because men like you are getting involved.”

The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office praised the program’s impact, saying:

“Our community thrives when fathers—biological or otherwise—rise to lead, mentor, and inspire. Together, we are shaping the men of tomorrow. In DeSoto County, we are building the next generation of winners.”
