Reminder: Political Signs Prohibited on Highway Rights-of-Way

As Tuesday’s primary elections draw near, candidates are being reminded that political signs are not allowed on highway rights-of-way under state law.

The restriction includes signs placed on highway shoulders, in mowed areas, and in some cases within as much as 300 feet of the roadway centerline, depending on the location.

Officials are encouraging candidates to make sure campaign staff and volunteers understand the law and avoid placing signs in prohibited areas. The reminder is also being emphasized as a public safety issue.

For more information about right-of-way distances along a state-maintained highway, candidates and campaign workers are advised to contact their local Mississippi Department of Transportation maintenance facility.
