Prewett to run in District 11 GOP primary

June 9, 2025 – Republicans added one more name to its list of Senate candidates on the final day of qualifying for the Aug. 5 special primary election.

Kendall Prewett of Horn Lake officially qualified for the Republican nomination for Senate District 11 and because he is the only candidate, Prewett will go directly from the August primary to the November general election. It is there Prewett is expected to face Democratic state Senator Reginald Jackson (D-Marks).

The newly-drawn Senate District 11 includes a portion of DeSoto County with Elmore, Horn Lake High School, Evansville, Sarah, Strayhorn, Pritchard, then south into Tunica and Quitman counties to include Clarksdale and Marks areas.

Prewett made the announcement on social media as his name was added to the list provided by the Mississippi GOP

Prewett made one previous attempt at politics, losing in the 2019 Republican primary for DeSoto County Supervisor in District 4, a race that was won by Lee Caldwell.

Prewett’s name was added to a GOP list in DeSoto County that has Southaven alderman Charlie Hoots running alone in Senate District 2, incumbent state Sen. Kevin Blackwell (R-Southaven) running unopposed in the Senate District 19 primary, and a two-person primary race in District 1, when incumbent state Sen. Michael McLendon is being challenged by Jon Stevenson.  Southaven alderman Charlie Hoots is running unopposed on the GOP side in District 2.

Democrats do not plan to release their list of candidates until it is submitted to the state Secretary of State’s office. However, county Democratic officials informed DeSoto County News that Dianne Dodson Black is filing for District 19 and Theresa Gillespie Isom in District 2.

Monday at 5 p.m. was the deadline to file qualifying papers and the parties have until June 13 to qualify the candidates for placement on the primary ballot.
