Olive Branch city employee honored with monthly Mayor’s Award for Excellence
OLIVE BRANCH — In recognition of her exceptional service and calming presence at City Hall, Gas Secretary Anita Hayes was presented with the city’s monthly Mayor’s Award during Tuesday night’s Board of Aldermen meeting.
The award, which includes a $250 cash prize, is unique in that it is funded entirely by private donations from local business leaders and community members rather than taxpayer dollars.
“Tax dollars are not used for this,” Mayor Ken Adams told the audience. “These are donations made by businesses and community-involved individuals to allow us to reward individuals who go above and beyond.”

The Mayor’s Award is a monthly tradition where city department heads submit recommendations for employees who exhibit extraordinary dedication. Adams noted that while choosing a winner each month is often difficult for the board due to the high caliber of city staff, Hayes’ “warm smile and welcoming presence” made her a standout candidate for this month’s selection.
Hayes was nominated for the honor by Public Works Director Justin Rose, who praised her ability to manage the front lines of city utility services with grace. As the first point of contact for many residents, Hayes has become known for her professionalism and her ability to de-escalate tense situations.
“She handles customers in a highly professional manner and has a remarkable ability to calm residents when they are upset or frustrated,” Adams said, reading from Rose’s nomination letter. “Her patience, empathy, and communication skills make a meaningful difference in our daily operations.”
Hayes was joined by family and colleagues as she accepted the award. Adams concluded the presentation by thanking Hayes for her continued pride in her work and her role as a positive example for both her coworkers and the Olive Branch community.
“She does a great job, and it’s a pleasure working with her,” Adams said.
