Traffic is at a standstill on two major highways Wednesday morning as a powerful winter storm continues to create hazardous travel conditions across North Mississippi. As of 9 a.m., both directions of I‑55 north of Grenada are shut down due to significant ice accumulation. I‑22 is also blocked in both directions from the Mississippi state line to Myrtle in Union County.

State officials report widespread ice on roads and bridges across 28 counties, including Alcorn, Benton, Bolivar, Calhoun, Coahoma, DeSoto, Grenada, Humphreys, Issaquena, Lafayette, Lee, Leflore, Marshall, Panola, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Quitman, Sharkey, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica, Union, Washington, Yalobusha, and Yazoo.

10 a.m. roads and bridges with ice, per MDOT.

Authorities continue urging residents to avoid travel entirely in affected areas. “For your safety, please stay off roadways impacted by winter weather,” officials emphasized.

Those facing a true emergency can check the latest road conditions through the MDOT Traffic app, available on the App Store and Google Play, or by visiting MDOTtraffic.com.
