Jackson County Deputy Michael Jimerson Killed in Shooting, Sheriff Says

A Jackson County sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed Wednesday night while responding to a disturbance call, Sheriff John Ledbetter said.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) said Deputy Michael Jimerson went to the Reserve Apartments on Washington Avenue in the St. Martin area around 11 p.m. and engaged in a brief foot pursuit with a female suspect, during which gunfire was exchanged. Jimerson was taken to Ocean Springs Hospital, where he later died, the MBI said. Officials confirmed the female suspect also was killed.

No other deputies were injured, the sheriff’s office said. Jimerson began his career as a reserve deputy in 2010 and was hired by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department in 2014, the office said. “Deputy Jimerson was a valued member of our law enforcement family and a trusted friend to many,” Sheriff Ledbetter said. “His loss is deeply felt across the department and the community he served. We extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers to his family, friends, and fellow deputies.”

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is continuing to investigate the case, the agency said.
