Horn Lake Elementary safe room opens at 5:30 p.m. amid severe weather threat

The safe room at Horn Lake Elementary School, located at 6341 Ridgewood, will open at 5:30 p.m. today due to the threat of severe weather, according to officials.

Community safe rooms across DeSoto County will open this afternoon to provide shelter for residents who prefer a protected space during the storm. Authorities emphasize that these facilities are not meant for residents to travel to after a tornado warning has been issued.

Additional safe rooms will open at Hernando Elementary, 455 Riley Street in Hernando; Hope Sullivan Elementary, 7985 Southaven Circle West; Lewisburg Elementary, 1717 Craft Road in Olive Branch; Walls Elementary, 6131 Delta View Road in Walls; and Olive Branch Elementary, 9549 Pigeon Roost in Olive Branch. The Southaven Community Safe Room at 7312 Highway 51N will open upon issuance of a tornado watch.

Officials from the city governments of Olive Branch, Hernando, Horn Lake, and Southaven, along with DeSoto County government and the sheriff’s office, are coordinating the shelter efforts, according to the county.
