Hernando marks Constitution Day with Bells Across America ceremony
HERNANDO, Miss. (Sept. 17, 2025) — Hernando joined communities across the nation Wednesday in observing Constitution Day with the annual “Bells Across America” event at the DeSoto County Courthouse.
The ceremony, organized by the Chief Mussacunna Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, featured Mayor Chip Johnson, Superintendent Cory Uselton, Alderman Miller, members of the DAR, and students from Northpoint Christian School. At precisely 3 p.m., four courthouse bells rang for one minute, echoing the bells that sounded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at 4 p.m. Eastern to honor the signing of the U.S. Constitution.
Jane Stroud delivered remarks highlighting the history of the observance. She noted that in 1955, the Daughters of the American Revolution petitioned Congress to set aside Sept. 17–23 as Constitution Week. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the resolution into law in 1956. Constitution Week encourages Americans to study the nation’s founding document and reflect on the freedoms it guarantees.
Constitution Day, observed each year on Sept. 17, commemorates the signing of the Constitution in 1787. Across the country, communities celebrate with educational programs, bell-ringing ceremonies, and public readings of the document. The Hernando observance served both as a reminder of the Constitution’s enduring importance and a teaching moment for the next generation.
“Constitution Week is a great time to learn more about this important document and to celebrate the freedoms it gave us,” Stroud said.
