Hernando Animal Shelter temporarily closes dog intake after Parvovirus case
HERNANDO, Miss. — The Hernando Animal Shelter has announced a temporary closure of its dog intake for the next 10 days after confirming a case of parvovirus in a recently admitted puppy. Shelter officials said the decision is a necessary precaution to prevent the spread of the highly contagious virus among the dogs currently in care.
If all goes well, the shelter plans to reopen dog intake on Oct. 30.
“Parvo is extremely contagious, especially in a shelter environment,” officials said in a statement. “We’re taking every precaution to protect the health and safety of the dogs already here.”
During the closure, residents who find stray dogs are encouraged to:
- Have the dog scanned for a microchip at a local veterinary office
- Post a photo and information on community lost-and-found pet pages
- Call the shelter to report the found dog and provide details and pictures
The shelter has been thoroughly sanitized, including all surrounding areas, to ensure a safe environment when intake resumes.
“At this time, we cannot accept any new dogs,” the statement continued. “We’re doing everything possible to prevent exposing healthy animals to this serious virus. Please keep our animals in your thoughts and prayers.”
