Gas prices near lowest levels since April
Gas pump prices were at their lowest level since April ahead of the July 4 holiday and Mississippi continues to have some of the lowest prices in the country. That’s according to a report from GasBuddy.com, the gas price reporting service based on consumer reports.
“Oil prices were remaining under considerable pressure due to a cloudy outlook for the global economy,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “We could see gasoline prices under some additional pressure soon, especially as we head into the closing innings of summer next month. I believe we may see prices close out the second half of the year below our expectations. This would be welcome news for motorists as the national average could fall below $3 per gallon this fall.”
The latest report on gasoline prices from the American Automobile Association (AAA) has Mississippi with the lowest average price in the nation for regular unleaded gasoline at $2.967 a gallon. The state is the only one with average prices below $3.00 a gallon. Louisiana is second at $3.067, followed by Alabama, Arkansas, and Tennessee.
In the Southaven-Olive Branch area covered by AAA, the current average of $2.994 a gallon is slightly higher from Saturday ($2.990) and higher from a week ago and a month ago at $2.987. The price is still below one year ago, when the price per gallon was $4.192.
The highest reported average price for regular unleaded gasoline in the area is $4.523, seen on June 13, 2022.
Elsewhere in Mississippi, metropolitan areas with average gas prices, according to AAA are: Biloxi-Gulfport-Pascagoula ($2.929), Hattiesburg ($2.952), and Jackson ($2.961).
