Former Olive Branch mayor, DCS school board member Nichols passes away

OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. — Milton Nichols, a transformative figure in North Mississippi politics who served two decades as the mayor of Olive Branch and 12 years on the DeSoto County Board of Education, has died.

Current Olive Branch Mayor Ken Adams announced the news Wednesday, ordering that all city flags fly at half-staff from Jan. 1 through Jan. 8, 2026, to honor Nichols’ legacy.

“Milton served 20 years as mayor of Olive Branch, becoming the city’s 21st mayor, and later continued his commitment to public service,” Adams said in a statement. “His steady leadership helped guide Olive Branch through years of growth and change.”

A Legacy of Growth and Infrastructure

During his mayoral tenure from 1989 to 2009, Nichols transitioned Olive Branch from a rural town into one of Mississippi’s fastest-growing suburban hubs. He was instrumental in utilizing the city’s proximity to Memphis to recruit major industrial and logistics partners, creating a tax base that supported the city’s rapid population expansion.

Nichols was a fierce advocate for local control and infrastructure. He laid the groundwork for the municipal acquisition of the Olive Branch Airport and oversaw the restoration of the historic Wesson House. His vision for the city’s “Old Towne” district included the construction of the current City Hall and the dedication of Nichols Plaza.

Commitment to Education

After retiring from the mayor’s office, Nichols transitioned to the DeSoto County Board of Education, representing District 1 from 2011 to 2023. His 12 years on the board followed in the footsteps of his cousin, former Superintendent Erlend Nichols, as the board worked to manage the growth of the largest school district in Mississippi.

DeSoto County Schools Supt. Cory Uselton praised Nichols’ tireless work for the district’s students and staff.

“We were honored to work alongside Mr. Milton Nichols during his time as a school board member,” Uselton said. “He cared deeply for DeSoto County Schools and the City of Olive Branch, and he was always willing to do whatever it took to support our students, teachers, and schools. His dedication and service will be greatly missed.”

A Dedicated Public Servant

Known for his “sharp legal mind” and “quick wit,” Nichols was often cited as the face of Olive Branch during its most pivotal decades. Beyond the boardroom, he was a staunch supporter of public safety, frequently remarking that a robust police department was the backbone of a successful city.

“He will be remembered not only for his years of service, but also for his deep dedication to the people he served,” Adams said.
