HERNANDO, Miss. — The DeSoto County Board of Supervisors has officially proclaimed the week of Nov. 4–11 as Operation Green Light for Veterans, encouraging residents, businesses, and organizations to display green lights in honor of the county’s 12,400 veterans — the third-largest veteran population in Mississippi.
Honoring Service and Sacrifice
The proclamation reflects the county’s appreciation for the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces and now call DeSoto County home. The initiative, known nationally as “Green Light for Veterans,” aims to raise awareness and express gratitude for their service while recognizing the 200,000 service members who transition to civilian life each year.

Supervisor President Mark Gardner read the proclamation during Monday’s Board of Supervisors meeting, noting that several city halls and public buildings — including Southaven’s — have already lit up green in solidarity with veterans.
“Lighting our buildings green is a small but meaningful way to thank those who’ve sacrificed for our freedoms,” Gardner said.
Recognizing Local Impact
DeSoto County also recognized Veterans Service Officer Bill Walker for his continued dedication to assisting local veterans. Walker, now titled Veterans Benefit Specialist, reported that DeSoto County veterans received $101,275,000 in benefits in 2023, ranking fifth statewide in total benefits brought in.
“I’m proud of what this county has done to support our veterans,” Walker said. “That number represents real help for the people who’ve served our country.”
How to Participate
Residents are encouraged to join Operation Green Light by displaying a green light in a window, porch, or place of business throughout the week of Nov. 4–11 to show visible support for those who have served.
“Operation Green Light” aligns DeSoto County with similar efforts nationwide, shining a beacon of gratitude across the community.
