Arrest made after a “lengthy pursuit”

DeSoto County Sheriff’s officials late Wednesday night released information about a high-speed chase involving deputies and a suspect that happened a week ago and ended with a crash of the suspect’s vehicle into several deputies’ vehicles, information just now being made available.  

A traffic stop was attempted on Thursday, Jan. 23 when an observed vehicle showed up on a report as stolen on the National Criminal Information Center, or NCIC, system. Instead of stopping, however, the suspect vehicle sped off, starting a lengthy chase that included ramming into several deputy vehicles.

The chase eventually ended and deputies had to struggle with the suspect before apprehending him and taking him into custody.  The information said necessary force was used in the apprehension and the suspect was taken to a hospital for evaluation.  

Officials said narcotics, a key fob programmer commonly used to steal cars, and a large number of additional vehicle key fobs common to car theft were found after a search of the vehicle.

The suspect, Michael Siggers, age 35 of Memphis, is said to have an extensive criminal record according to authorities, who said he has had charges for aggravated assault, larceny, drug-related offenses, weapons possession, resisting arrest and a long list of traffic violations in his criminal history. 

Siggers was arrested on Jan. 23 and was released on Tuesday, Jan. 28 on $50,000 bond. Jail information indicates that Siggers, in this case, is charged with felony fleeing a law enforcement officer, and aggravated assault on an officer with a weapon.  

Information released Wednesday night did not include where or when on Jan. 23 the incident took place, only that it was on a “public road.” 

Note: Thursday morning, on request, we learned the chase started on U.S. Highway 61 near Star landing Road and ended in Tunica.
