Community safe rooms will open across DeSoto County this afternoon as a precaution against severe weather. Residents are encouraged to use these shelters if they feel more comfortable than staying at home.

Local officials said a tornado watch was issued Sunday and will remain in effect until 11 p.m. CDT. A community safe room at 7312 Highway 51 has been opened to residents for the duration of the watch.

The Storm Prediction Center placed the area under an enhanced risk of severe storms on March 15, 2026. Local officials urged residents to prepare for a fast-moving line of storms expected between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux in Southaven is marking its first anniversary and is inviting the public to a celebration, the restaurant said. The restaurant promoted its made-from-scratch menu, wall-to-wall televisions and craft beer and cocktail lists.

The Southaven Chamber invites business leaders to a networking event at Avid Hotel Memphis-Southaven, sponsored by Zykea Pegues and the Avid Team, with Coffee Central providing coffee.

The Southaven Young Professionals will host a networking lunch called “On the Menu” featuring Jeff Jones of MidSouth Homes of Refining Leaders on March 18 at the NWCC Ranger Center, organizers said. The event is open to all ages and includes lunch; members pay $15 and nonmembers $25.

Panola County officials warned in a morning advisory that severe storms could bring winds of more than 70 mph this evening. Temperatures are expected to fall below freezing early the following morning.

The founder of The Veteran’s Veteran LLC said the event aims to bring local veterans together for conversation and to link them with supportive businesses. The organizer is seeking a coffee shop or other business to host the meetings.
